Although this information is far from being a confirmed fact, there have been lots of rumors going around that Microsoft is seriously considering purchasing Vivendi's Games Division. In case you don't know, this division includes Valve, (Half-life, Counterstrike), Blizzard, (Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft), Lord of the Rings, Spyro and more. As you can see this would be a huge change in the gaming world. Also a pricey one. Microsoft recently paid 365 million dollars for the acquisation of Rare Inc. This price is nothing compared to what the price of Vivendi's Games Division would be.
An email from Vivendi was sent to all developers by accident last week. The email stated that all work for GBA games were to be suspended. Soon after, Vivendi recalled the email and called it an error. Perhaps this has something to do with this suspected deal.
"We've heard all sorts of rumors over the past months - Activision, EA and many more. They'd all like to get their hands on Blizzard. I guess Microsoft are one of the few companies that has enough money." said a Vivendi Spokesperson.
A Microsoft spokesperson said, "This is a rumor and we do not comment on rumors."
If this deal does indeed become a reality, then it will surely mean Sony and Nintendo will be left in the dark when it comes to the upcoming console title, 'Starcraft Ghost', as well as other titles that will be on consoles, such as Half-Life 2, and CounterStrike.
Keep in mind that there have previously been lots of rumors going around about gamin companies buying each other. For example, Microsoft was believed to have been purchasing Capcom, however the deal never actually existed. However, the acquisition of Rare by Microsoft does show there is a possibility for the purchase of Vivendi's Games Division.
