TransWorld Surf
Reviewed by: Joel

Latley there have been some pathetic attempts of creating even a decent surfing game. Well now Infogrames and Angel Studios have stepped up to the plate and have created an excellent looking surfing game.

Gameplay: Before I played Transworld Surf I had played a few other surfing games that just didn't work. I was curious on how to actually get a surfing game to work correctly. Well now that I have played Transworld Surf I now know, and infrogrames did a heck of a job

Angel Studios did an excellent job of making a realistic surfing game with a arcade like feel. This combination made into a great playing surfing game that really sets the bar for all surfing games to come.

Like most extreme sport games the goal is to pull off as many tricks and combos without falling to rack up points. There are four different modes which are Single Session,
Pro Tour, Free Surf, and Multiplayer. The Pro Tour is where you will have the most fun, opening new breaks, videos, and codes. I was a little disapointed with the Pro Tour mode though, it really wasn't very complex, I think they could have done a few little mini-games during the pro tour to mix things up a little.

The actual gameplay it's self was a lot of fun, but at the same time can be very challenging. Getting big air off of the waves and pulling off big tricks is extremely difficult and this is where you a huge learning curve is. It took me a while to figure out where and how to pull off big air tricks. Once you got that down it is clear sailing from there.

When you get to the later couses the waves start to grow and grow as you move onto the later courses. Some of these waves are just unbleivably big, and that is when Transworld surf becomes an extremely fun surfing game.

I really didn't understand why Angel Studios threwin the stupid sharks, jellyfish, and dolphins in the game. They do nothing at all for the game, I think that the game is hard enough and to have to avoid these animals was just a little to much, and was totally unnecessary.

Graphics: Angel Studios did an excellent job of completing the difficult task of making the water and waves look realistic. The waves are to say the least amazing. I was impressed with how well they made the different locations look. You could actually see big differences from the different locations. The surfers are very nicley detailed, but they leave plenty of room for improvement.

Controls: I think if Infogrames decides to create a Transworld Surf 2 they are going to need to work with the controls. The controls for Transworld Surf are very un-responcive which can cause some serious headaches. The controls are identical to that of Tony Hawk Pro Skater which is nice, so there won't be a long learning curve, for most people.

Replay: Currently no rating.

Sound: As all extreme sport games the music plays a huge roll in the games. Well Angel Studios does a pretty good job of making a nice sounding soundtrack that I found to be very nice. Angel Studios included some big name artists like Kut U Up, The Plug Uglies, The Stitches, and Pepper. Now the sound effects could use some work. The surfers grunt every once an a while and the grunts never change, they all sound the same. The overall sound effects were OK but they needed to vary more.

Overall Presentation:
