Genma Onimusha
Reviewed by: Bagel

In Genma Onimusha you play the role of Samanosuke, a lone swordsman who heard the princess’s calls for help and rushes to her side, only to find she has mysteriously vanished. Now you must stand by your vow and avenge the princess and defeat a legion of demon warriors.

Gameplay: The game play in Genma Onimusha is a mixture between Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. You walk around with your blade killing demons and ogres and at the same time solving puzzles and finding hints. Besides from just walking around hacking and slashing demons you also have the ability to absorb souls.

When you kill a demon you can absorb there soul by pressing the A button, but you must work fast before the enemy takes it for themselves and becomes more powerful. When you absorb a soul it gives you bonus points. There are four types of souls: Pink, yellow, white, and green. Pink souls are used to upgrade your weapons giving you a more powerful attack. Yellow heals you, white fills your magic, and green allows you to become temporary invisible.

There are three different orbs in the game: Thunder, Fire, and Wind. As you find those you can attach them to your weapon. Killing demons gives you skill points. Those skill points are used to enhance your orbs leveling them up making them more powerful.

Graphics: The graphics in Genma Onimusha are very impressive. All of the player models are great and the animation is realistic and nicely done. There are many different types of beasts in the game. Which is good because you don’t get bored killing the same thing over and over again. All of those enemies look impressive. The level design is nicely detailed and all of the backgrounds are pre-rendered and look good. The cut scenes are really nice and really add to the games story line.

Controls: The controls are easy to use and quick to get used to. All there really is to know is Attack X, and absorb souls A. Plus also Special Attack which is Y.

Replay: Genma Onimusha has nothing more then the main game, but that doesn’t mean there is no replay value too it. The game is good enough and short (only a few hours) so you will go back and beat it again a few more times.

Sound: The sounds of the game are all great. The noises the swords make and the sound of gutting the demons all sound nice. The voice acting is good and the sound track is perfect for this game. All though it is a survival horror there are no sounds in the game that are creepy.

Overall Presentation: Genma Onimusha is a great third person adventure that I can recommend to anyone. Not just a rental but a buy. Even if you’ve beaten it on PS2 its still worth checking out as there is so much more.
